Sometimes when I read our local news portals (I.e. Star, Straits Times and etc) I wonder why they do not have a section for comments at the bottom of their page. International news portals like CNN and etc allow people to comment on the news, so why can’t we have that as well? Shouldn’t we be able to gauge the public opinion by just reading the comments on the articles?
Of course, we have the alternative news portals like Malaysia Insider, Malaysia Today and etc which allows the public to comment on pieces of news.
Having read the comments off the articles there, I can definitely gauge the feelings of the commenters. It is almost impossible not to be able to sense the sentiments while reading them comments. That is, unless you are illiterate ;-p
I have come to the conclusion that most Malaysian commenters are not do not really give good comments. Most of it is always one way. Negative. Name calling. Insulting. Racist. But what about constructive criticism? Close to zilch. Sometimes I wonder why the people leave such comments which do not contribute much to the article. Comments like “Hidup PR!!” “Dear PM, you suck!!” are of no use. They waste my bandwidth. Honestly, anyone educated reading all these comments will laugh at your intellectual level. Venting frustrations is okay, but at least give some form of reasoning, not just something short and stupid like the 2 examples I’ve just given.
I guess now I know why in some countries, they have comments section on their sites while ours doesn’t have. Most of us are incapable of giving smart comments.
And the funny thing is that if 1 commenter says something good about the government, his comment will be rated lowly and he will be accused of being a pet of some politician and other insults coming his way. It seems that the only people who comment are just expressing their anti government sentiments, and not thinking with rationale.
They will complain about price hikes and etc, and say that if the Opposition takes over, the prices will be lower. Are these people dumb?? Gosh… I can bet with you that even if the Opposition takes over, the prices of essential goods will still have to go up. Our country is already in too much debt due to mismanagement of funds. Of course we can always point fingers, but stern actions, no matter how costly will have to be taken.
All we can hope is that the money saved from all these subsidies are used in the right manner. It is of course understandable for the people to be angry when the Govt tells you they haven’t got money to give our children scholarships or pay for our medical bills and yet are considering building a new Parliament building. They are also already building a new Palace for our King (which many people are questioning the move) which costs RM 800 million. The savings from the recent subsidies is RM 750 million, which isn’t even enough to cover the cost of building the Palace.
What we really need is transparency and accountability for all these govt spending. The govt has to be prudent and prioritise the projects which are important towards giving us a brighter future. We cannot say we don’t have money to send kids to universities and yet build a new Palace for the King? Can the King, with his new Palace, educate thousands of students every year for free? Prioritise please.
And for the commenters who think that the Opposition will not raise prices, dream on. Prices are going up all over the world. We should live in the real world. But what we really want is actually for our country to start becoming competitive and stop all the leakages thru corruption and nepotism.
Till then, we will continuously have uneducated voters in every general election whose votes are always based on which government can continue subsidizing them. How is this any different from the government bribing every1? Isn’t this form of bribery to keep you happy, to keep you voting for them; a waste of money?
So commenters and fellow voters, please think wisely before you post up a comment / mark your ballot papers…
Boodyboy, out!!!
