Movie Review: Great Day (Tian Tian How Tian)

Its been a long time since I last did a movie review, but i think this movie is worth a review.

The reason being: its a local production with local personalities. So in a way must support right?

WRONG!

If its not good, local or not, not worth supporting.

I watched this movie on the insistance of my mum. She wanted tow atch this so badly that she was willing to watch the midnight opening on Wednesday. I bargained with her and we settled for Friday night. And yes, it was a Friday midnight movie date with my mom. Sue me.

Okay, the movie storyline is simple. Its about 2 old men who live in a old folk's home trying to outdo each other. They are always comparing how much their children loves them and how each of their children are successful. Long story short, its a family movie.

I absolutely LOVE the landscape in ths movie. Set amongst the paddy fields of Kedah / Perlis, i love the colors of the sky and the green paddy plants. There is a moral to these type of movies and I can say that it is pretty moving. Worth taking your family out to watch this movie.

Dialogues are in Mandarin, Cantonese as well as Hokkien, so there is a very Chinese kampung feel to that movie.

Rating: 7 / 10. pretty good for a local production on a budget. Can't help but notice the brands that were highlighted in the movie (no choice lah, sponsors mah...)

Movie Review - Takers

Got the invite to watch the Preview of Takers.

Takers is a movie about a group of very well drilled thieves who has managed to pull off the perfect heist everytime. But their latest heist, is anything but smooth.

It stars Matt Dillon, Paul Walker, rapper T.I., Hayden Christensen and also woman beater, Chris Brown. My friend was kinda still having some form of hatred towards Chris Brown. She had hoped that Chris Brown's character dies a horrible death in this movie, LOL!!
I wont reveal what happened, so you can still go and catch this film.

The movie was paced fairly well, didnt bore me at all. But then, the movie didnt really blow me away. You kinda know the twist and turns in the movie lah if u've watched numerous robbery movies.

Worth a watch!

My rating: 7/10

Movie Review - Legend of the Guardians : The Owls of Ga'Hoole

Caught this movie over the weekend, kinda late considering its gonna be off the screens by this week.

It is based on a best seller children's book. I didnt get to watch the 3D version, but I can tell that this movie is made for 3D. The graphics are amazing and you can see every feather of the owls in detail.

One gripe though, during the fighting scenes, I cant tell which owl is which, hehehe soemthing like in Transformers.

Story was well laid out, and yeah voice acting pretty decent as well. Good triumphs over bad as usual, just that this movie is in the owl world. For those who think that its bullshit that owls can wear helmets to war, dont bother. Watch it with an open mind and you might be surprised
=)

Movie Review - Eat Pray Love

This movie is based on the best seller "chick-lit" book a few years back by Elizabeth Gilbert.
Its a story of a woman who decides to take a year off to "find herself".

She takes off to Italy, then India and finally ends up in Bali.
Julia Roberts, to me, is believable as the main lead of the movie. I really hated her character at the beginning of the movie, of how she just gave up. But of course, this movie is all about her. Its from her point of view and how we should sympathise with her sad life.

I didn't really like the ending as well. It seemed all too easy. For her to not move to the next level with her boyfriend, and then leave him hanging, and then to wanting him back, its just a bit unbelievavle. How selfish of her, to just decide to want him back. But since this is after all chick-lit, the guy, like a sad puppy is more than happy when she wants him back to move up to the next level of their relationship.
Selfish her!

But then again, there was good flow throughout the film and I think its quite faultless. i just have an issue with the storyline and the selfish main character. Oh well...

My rating : 6.5 / 10 (the extra half a mark was for Julia's portrayal)

Movie Review - Wall Street : Money Never Sleeps

Finally caught this movie last weekend (it's been a tough time trying to find a friend interested enough to watch this film).

I have not caught the earlier Wall Street movie, which opened about 20 years ago. This movie is a continuation of Gordon Gekko's (Michael Douglas) life after coming out of prison. SHia LeBeouf plays his future con-in-law in this movie.

No spoilers here, but I really enjoyed watching scenes of grown men arguing in a meeting room over banking policies! That was so intense!!! (yes, i'm kinda finance-geeky when watching this movie). It kinda reminds of the kind of banking career I wanted to be in when I graduated many years ago. Oh well, life has brought me to other horizons...

Overall, I really liked the movie and I wouldn't catching it again for a second time. Would have loved to catch this movie with my friend in Hong Kong, as he is in the Banking industry over there.

My rating : 7.5 /10

Shutter Island

I managed to catch this movie last week with a dear old friend. It was an interesting night as I initially wanted to watch Toy Story 3D, but my friend insisted she wanted to watch something else. What made it more interesting was that that night I had the option of choosing between 2 fabulous women to go out with, hahaha!!

The unfortunate thing is that both women are already unavailable, no matter how attractive they were (although I wouldn't mind being the fling ;-p).

The venue was also a strange option, Berjaya Times Square. And the only reason why we chose that place was because the screen time suited us. DInner was at Papa John's Pizza, another franchise owned by the Berjaya Group. However, i think the food there kind of disappointed me. DOnt think I'll be back for seconds.

On to the movie, its a great movie if you like thrillers. Once of the most mind engaging movies i've watched for sometime. The movie was well played out, and Leonardo Di Caprio did a great job in this movie.

Not once was I bored despite it being 2 hour plus long. As usual, there are many twists and turns in this movie and I enjoyed every bit of it.

I highly recommend the movie if you are in the mood for some thinking and unravelling.
As for the book, i dont know how good it is, but the movie's great ;-p

8/10 for me!!

The Night I watched Date Night

I was lucky enough to have been able to catch the preview of this movie starring Steve Carrell. I've been a Steve Carrell fan since days of The Office, 40 Year Old Virgin and etc. I was actually waiting for the movie to be released next week until my friend, SM mentioned that she has extra tickets to catch it. Like a hungry crocodile, I snapped up the opportunity within the split second ;-p

The movie was laugh out loud from the start to the finish. Not one moment was the movie boring, or felt too draggy. The story was well played out and the plot, was well, it's comedy lah!

Both the lead characters were well played by both Steve and Tina (of the 30 Rock fame) and the funniest scene has to be the one with the cab driver.

Mark Wahlberg also guest stars in this movie, though he isn't funny, Look at his shoulder! Man that guy has nice shoulders! Fans of Mark Wahlberg should definitely watch this movie, as he is virtually topless 75% of his screen time ;-p

How would I rate the movie? 7/10 for sure. Its not the best comedy out there, but it makes a good movie if you're out on a date ;-p

Valentine's Day : The Movie

Managed to catch this star studded movie! And what made it even more star studded was that I even saw Marion Caunter, a local TV host, in the same cinema as well!

I liked the movie although some may say it really lacked direction as well as plot. But for me, i think its a short story of various people's lives on Valentines Day and how it unfold for them.I think every did quite well, even Taylor Swift. Although its her first time on the big screen, she can improve. But yes, I like the movie because it was light, but also the emotional bits tugged my heart strings.

My rating for the movie: 7/10 :-)

*******

Well, this year's valentines day falls on the 1st day of Chinese New year. Hence I thinkmost florists and restaurants will not be able to cash in on this day. Hey, even I dont have to spend a single cent this year (LOL!!) But of course, if i had a choice, i wouldn't be grumbling if I had to spend it on a special some1 this year.

Some people argue that Ppl should not only celebrate this 1 day, but should be doing it for 365 days a year. However, in my opinion, of course a person is expected to shower love to their loved ones 365 days a year. But on special days like Birthdays, anniversaries, Valentine's you do something out of the ordinary. And days like these break the monotony of a couple's life together.

And of course, there are some who argue its over commercialised, but which festive period in the world isn't commercialised? That doesn't mean we should stop celebrating it right??

Just my few cents worth.

In a few day time we will be celebrating Chinese New year as well as Valentine's (although Valentine's isnt an official holiday). Whatever it is, I hope all you readers celebrate this special days with the people you love and cherish.

Movie Review: Time Traveller's Wife

Thanks to a very very old friend whom I have not met for a very long time, I got 2 tickets to watch this highly acclaimed movie. After seeing the trailer, i was eagerly anticipating the release of this movie. I couldnt believe my luck when SM told me I could have her tickets to the premier of this movie. SM, if you can read this, thanks a lot! I loved the movie, and I owe you dinner for the great favour! :-D

The movie is based on the best selling novel by American author Audrey Niffenegger. It is a love story about a man with a genetic disorder that causes him to time travel unpredictably, and about his wife, an artist, who has to cope with his frequent absences and dangerous experiences.

The movie is starred by Eric Bana, the Time Traveller and Rachel McAdams who is wonderful as the lover of the Time Traveller.

A damn good looking couple if you ask me. Fans of Eric Bana would be very happy as they would get their money's worth of Eric without clothes. Lots of times. Why? Because when the travels thru time, he cannot bring his clothing along with him ;-p

As for Rachel McAdams, she portrays Clare, the love of his life in the movie, very well. And did I mention she looks great as well?

Wonderful movie with a great storyline, I'd rate it 7 out of 10 :-)

Catch the trailer of the movie below, and if you like it, catch it in the cinemas when it opens!

Movie Review: 500 Days of Summer

Finally got a chance to catch this movie a few days back. This movie is not shown in all cinemas, currently only available at TGV KLCC. Why this is the case, I really don't know. Maybe its the distributorship issue.

Which is such a waste because I think this is one of the best movies I've seen this year if not the best. I'm really torn between this movie and Disney's Up.

THe genre for this movie is romance/comedy. While I agree with the comedy part, i dont think the romance part does it justice. I think its more than just romance. Its a depiction of the roller coaster of emotions a person goes through in a relationship. I would call it relationship/comedy instead.

Joseph Gordon Levitt and Zooey Deschanel are great in this movie as the lead characters. Great chemistry between the both of them. While you watch the movie, you can't help but be totally engrossed in it. And the weird thing is, I actually feel that the stuff that has happened to him is somehow relevant to all of us. I think somehow, it a realistic overview of how love is like.

Here is a short synopsis from the IMDB website:

"After it looks as if she's left his life for good this time, Tom Hansen reflects back on the just over one year that he knew Summer Finn. Despite being physically average in almost every respect, Summer had always attracted the attention of men, Tom included. For Tom, it was love at first sight when she walked into the greeting card company where he worked, she was the new administrative assistant. Soon, Tom knew that Summer was the woman with whom he wanted to spend the rest of his life. Although Summer did not believe in relationships or boyfriends - in her assertion, real life will always ultimately get in the way - Tom and Summer became more than just friends. Through the trials and tribulations of Tom and Summer's so-called relationship, Tom could always count on the advice of his two best friends, McKenzie and Paul. However, it is Tom's adolescent sister, Rachel, who is his voice of reason. After all is said and done, Tom is the one who ultimately has to make the choice to listen or not."

The movie had some really laugh out loud moments. I cant remember the last time i laughed this loud to a funny scene in the movie, but I guess in our daily lives, we mix the good, funny and bad days together.

Below is the trailer to the movie :-)

I really loved the music in the song. It sets up the mood of the scene to get us into it.

No wonder this movie has been highly regarded in movie festivals and also in countries which it has opened in.

Would I catch this movie again? Definitely! My score? 9/10

GO catch this movie before it goes off the screen!

movie review: The Mummy 3

Caught this movie yesterday with my sister. my sister said she loved that it was funny. I think it really sucked except for the few moments of laughter and madness.

THis is again, like the X-files. the writers are just trying to squeeze as much money from this franchise as possible. The storyline is poor. I mean the previous 2 storylines also weren't that great but at least the adventures and the characters gripped us. This time again, there is just a lame story just to get brendan fraser into mummy hunting action.

Some of the CGI looked a bit fake. Jet Li sucked in this show. How can a man, whom i have grown up watching him kick 20-30 ppl's butt at the same time lose to Brendan Fraser in a straight fight? Thats just ridiculous.

I totally agreed with the review written by the malay mail. Its just not good enough compared to whats been dished out this summer. 2nd worst movie i've seen this year.

Rating: 4/10 (slightly better than X-Files)

Movie review: The X Files: I want to believe

Caught this movie last week. My advice is, worst RM40 i ever spent on a movie (2 premier class tickets mar...) this year. The writers must have lost their plot. Storyline is pretty bad (don't wanna spoil it for those who have not caught it.) But my advice is don't even watch it. You will definitely come out cursing because our expectations of this movie is pretty high. Even for a standalone movie, it sucks big time. Ye si know there are still people whoa re stubborn, they want to see how bad this film is. Be my guest... I think the title is quite suitable for this movie. I (as a fan, really) want to believe (that this movie is great). But it's not. Its like they are trying to squeeze the remaining milk out of this old cash cow.

My rating 2/10.
